Standards and Instructions
- Each certificate has a set of National Board "standards". These standards are different than the content standards you are used to. They are essential for success in the NBC process. Standards for each certificate area can be found on www.NBPTS.org. Once you identify which certificate you want to pursue, use the resources found at https://www.nbpts.org/national-board-certification/candidate-center/first-time-and-returning-candidate-resources/, in addition you will find here the instructions for the what you will need to do to complete the process.
On the Candidate resource page you will find important common forms you will need (permission slips, etc.) to complete the NBC process. Plus, this is where you can search for the certificate specific resources necessary.
Step 1- Print "General Portfolio Instructions" - these are the same for all certificates and the first document that you should read, very important and helpful overview of the NBC process!!!
Step 2- Scroll to the bottom of the page, where it says "Standards and Instructions for First-time and Returning Candidates". Choose the "discipline" (certificate) and the "Developmental Level" (age span) that you would like to pursue. An overview of the different certificates can be found here. We recommend you wait to print these long documents until after early August, as there are often minor changes made over the summer.
Step 3- Print out the PDF instructions for Components 1, 2, 3, and 4 (you don't need to print out the word documents, you will access these later when you need to complete them digitally.) these do not need to be printed in color.
Step 4- Print out your NBPTS Standards
Step 5- We recommend placing these in a binder with tabs, or having the materials bound!
